Images of Gandhi
As I reflect on my time in India, I must mention the many images of Gandhi which we experienced everywhere - in public and private spaces, in schools, on the money, in art , on advertising ... the legacy of the father of modern India endures and his presence remains with the people.
Cecilia, I have enjoyed your blog tremendously! Two questions: 1) Have you spoken/heard Spanish on this trip? 2) To what extent is the literature curriculum composed of diverse works in the schools you've visited? Any American lit? Miss you and wish you a safe journey back, Cathy
Thanks Cathy!! I have indeed spoken a bit of Spanish on this trip and schools tell me that the study of Spanish is growing tremendously in India. At the Bombay Int'l School, I spoke with Diana, the principal, who is from Venezuela and in Bangalore, I met a Spanish teacher named Agustin who is from Argentina. I have not run into any fellow Mexicans but was profoundly unimpressed with a "Mexican Happy Hour" offered at the Shalimar Hotel...Let's just say I could have done without the sombreros...As for the literature curriculum, I wish I could have had more conversations on this topic. I know that the IB curriculum (which is followed by the Int'l schools) does include a great diversity of works. The American Embassy School has a very extensive reading list which I think you can find on their website. Miss you! cmn
